The Millennium Challenge Account-Malawi (MCA-M) will tomorrow officially introduce to the community the firms set to construct the new Bwengu 132 kilovolts (kV) power sub-station and overhead power lines.

MCA-M has engaged a Chinese firm, Chint Electric International, for the construction of the 132kV power substation valued at $15 million (about K11 billion) and an Indian company, Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited, to construct the 132kV overhead power line.

MCA-M communications and outreach director Zilani Khonje said they were looking for companies with technical expertise in designing, manufacturing and construction.

“MCA-Malawi, Escom, Millennium Challenge Corporation [MCC] and the consultants were looking for construction companies that are highly experienced in specific construction [overhead lines or substations],” she said.

The construction of the sub-station and overhead power lines is part of the $350.7 million (K253 billion) five-year compact that focuses on investments in the energy sector to increase availability, reliability and quality of power.
