Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) will tomorrow host the Youth Arise Network (YAN) Fundraising Basketball Tournament.

YAN chief executive officer Rejoice Eve Namale said the day-long event seeks to raise funds for the purchase of carpentry and tailoring equipment for youths doing entrepreneurship training facilitated by the non-profit youth organisation’s volunteers in Blantyre and Zomba, to practise their business.

YAN volunteers want to raise funds through basketball

“We hope to raise at least K2.5 million for the Tiyeni Tikwezane Entrepreneurship Initiative, which is designed to encourage youths to become independent through training and entrepreneurship.  We believe the fundraising basketball event will help us in this regard,” she said.

Fourteen teams, including Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) men’s teams Bricks, Lox 360, Mikoko and Crazy Warriors will also take part alongside ladies’ outfits Mystics and Eagles.

Corporate basketball teams such as NBS Bank, CDH Investment Bank and Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), are also expected to participate.

“Furthermore, we have one junior league game involving Firestorms and Storm Trupaz. Malawi University of Science and Technology [Must] will also be part of the event under college basketball. All teams will receive certificates of participation for fulfilling community service with YAN,” she said.

The fun-filled event will as well have music performances by urban artists Barry One, Dali, Nash and a surprise guest artist. Food and drinks will also be on sale and Castel Malawi will provide samples of their new energy drink XXL.
