“We constructed the Lions Sight First [hospital] at Kamuzu Central Hospital [KCH] for this very purpose and every year we choose one community, especially where eye services are not easy to access, to conduct this exercise and give whatever help we can,” said Kaimvi.

KCH ophthalamic clinical officer Jonathan Chiutsi said eye problems are rampant in many parts of the Central Region due to poor sanitation in communities.

“The major eye problem is bacterial infection, which causes discharge and laceration in the eyes and a person lacks peace. Hygiene practices can prevent the problem,” he said. n
