Top Zimbabwean outfit Caps United, popularly known as ‘Makepekepe’, is the foreign team that will take part in the Zambezi Challenge Cup to be staged in the country on February 15 and 16.
The Harare-based side’s director Twine Phiri confirmed agreeing to take part in the two-day tournament in Lilongwe, that will also involve three local clubs.
“Having agreed on the terms with the organisers Topsports, I can confirm that we will take part in the Zambezi Challenge. After all, Malawi is our second home and we are in sound partnership with some teams such as Mighty Wanderers,” said Phiri in a telephone interview from Harare yesterday.
Caps is home to former Mighty Wanderers exciting winger Gerald Phiri Jnr. Other Malawians who have played for the team are Joseph Kamwendo, Haji Tambala and Gift Makoloni.
Addressing a press briefing in Blantyre on Friday, Topsports operations manager Kelvin Moyo and his colleague Nicola Alibaba said the total package of the tournament, which has been dubbed Wafa-Wafa, is K10 million with about K4 million going towards prizes. The champions will cart home K3 million.
“The rest will cater for other things such as food, transport, accommodation and administration,” said Alibaba, who is the firm’s events manager.
Alibaba said they will be signing a two-year contract with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).
She said the aim of the tournament is to expose local footballers to international football since they no longer take part in international competitions.
“It is also a business venture on our part. We are not doing it for corporate social responsibility, but purely business as days for the game to be run as a social responsibility are gone,” she said.
