Youths have been urged to care for and protect the elderly in their areas to learn from them and become reliable citizens.

Isaac Jomo, a youth in Blantyre’s Bangwe Township, said this on Friday after organising a trip to Lake Malawi in Mangochi for some of the elderly people under his care as a belated Mother’s Day treat.elderly

He said: “I have learnt a lot of things through interacting with elderly people and I would like to encourage my fellow youth to protect and care for the elderly in their areas, to benefit from the rich knowledge they have.

“There are some youths who regard elders as wizards and witches who block their progress in life. But that is not true because the elderly know how to tackle some of the problems we are grappling with now.”

One of the elderly people that made the trip, Agnes Alfanetti, said Jomo gives them laundry and bath soap, cooking oil, vegetables, sugar and bread every Wednesday. She said these are things she said they could not provide for themselves.
