Care Malawi, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has donated Covid-19 equipment to Mchinji Police Station’s Victim Support Unit to enhance its fight against the pandemic.

The items include mattresses, buckets, blankets, gloves, soap and hand sanitisers.

The donation follows a training the NGO conducted last month on gender-based violence (GBV) and Covid-19 prevention for the victim support unit subcommittee members.

In an interview, the NGO’s monitoring and evaluation officer Tanangachi Lungu said victim support units play a pivotal role in assisting GBV victims.

“We hope the donation will help protect victim support unit subcommittee members from the pandemic as they discharge their duties as well as protect the victims,” she said.

On his part, Mchinji Police Station officer-in-charge George Mtetemera commended the NGO for the donation.

“The items will also help community policing structures in complementing police efforts in responding to GBV issues and Covid-19,” he said.

Mtetemera said the items will be distributed to victim support unit subcommittees of Kawere, Kapunula, Simphasi, Kapondo, Pitala and Chimwala.
