FAM general secretary (GS) Alfred Gunda said in a statement Castel Malawi Limited managing director Gilles Leclerc and the association’s president Walter Nyamilandu will grace the event.

The GS, however, could not divulge information on this year’s competition format.

Previously, the competition has been played in two rounds.

In the first round, regional Leagues battle for 16 slots to join 16 Super League teams for the round of 32.

This will be the first Carlsberg Cup under Castel Malawi Limited following the acquisition of Carlsberg Malawi Limited by the French firm.

Earlier this year, FAM competitions subcommittee chairperson  Jabbar Alide said the sponsorship would be increased from K40 million to K45 million.

However, the cup’s name will not change despite the change in sponsors’ name, according to FAM commercial and marketing director Limbani Matola.

Nyasa Big Bullets are defending champions after beating their rivals Be Forward Wanderers 4-3 on post-match penalties at Bingu National Stadium.

Bullets assistant coach Elia Kananji has won the cup four consecutive times—twice each with Bullets and Wanderers.

Kananji first won the cup with Bullets in 2014.

He switched to Wanderers and went on to win the cup in 2015 and 2016.

When Wanderers fired him, he rejoined Bullets and won the cup the cup again in 2017.
