Carlsberg Malawi Limited yesterday announced one-year K30 million cup sponsorship extension during a relaunch ceremony held at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Blantyre.

Carlsberg senior brands manager (alcoholic beverages) Twikale Chirwa yesterday said the initial three-year contract had expired this year.

“Carlsberg is happy to be back. We would like to maintain standards we set last year such as having custom jerseys with the players’ names. We believe in fair play and discipline and enhanced performance so that the Carlsberg Cup acts as a bridge builder to the national team. We saw Zomba United go all the way to the final last year, we would like to see the same this year,” Chirwa said.

During the ceremony, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said he was excited to relaunch the cup whose final will be held on August 29, 2015.

“We hope our sponsors will be pleased and they will think of coming back bigger. We appreciate they give a lot of money to the Flames, we believe they will set the history of cup competitions by hitting K100 million (US$232 558). We will try to arrest hooliganism,” Nyirenda said.

In this year’s edition, the winner will get K9 million (US$20 930), K4 million (US$9 302) for runner-up, K500 000 (US$1 163) each for semi-finalists and K300 000 (US$698) for quarter-finalists.

There is also K100 000 (US$233) for top scorer. Man-of-the matches from the quarter stage will each get K10 000 (US$23), in addition to K100 000 (US$233) each for best print and electronic media awards. Some K100 000 will go to discovery of the tournament.

To be played in two phases on knock-out basis, the competition will involve 15 TNM Super League teams and 36 Premier Division clubs with registration to run from May 5 to 14.

The first phase will involve 36 regional teams with each region contributing 12 top from last season’s log tables. Eventually, nine best teams to sail through two rounds of the regional qualifiers will join the 15 Super League teams, with last season’s top eight exempted from the preliminary phase of the national championship.
