Carlsberg excited to reunite with darts

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) darts team, Engineers, were on Monday crowned Carlsberg Stout National Darts Champions at Parachute Battalion in Salima.

But it was not plain-sailing for Engineers, who won the tournament courtesy of better legs having tied on 25 points with runners-up HTD Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).

They each won eight games and drew against each other in an exciting two-day contest that went down to the wire.

MPC finished third while Cobbe Stingers—another MDF outfit based in Zomba—came fourth.

Engineers received a trophy, miniatures and K300 000  while HTD BSC received a trophy, miniatures and K200 000. Third-placed MPC pocketed K125 000 while Cobbe went away with K75 000.

In the ladies category, Mzuzu Select outclassed all other select teams to emerge winners. They were followed by Blantyre B Select.

Mzuzu Select were rewarded with a trophy, miniatures and K100 000 while the runners-up got miniatures and K75 000.

Sponsors Carlsberg Malawi Limited representative Frank Binauli said they were delighted to bounce back into darts sponsorship.

“Commitment on continued sponsorship will mainly depend on strict adherence to discipline as well as the support for Carlsberg brands, in particular Carlsberg Stout, [because] as a company we want to see the Stout brand growing,” he said.

Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) administration manager Henry Mereka thanked Carlsberg for renewing the romance with darts through the stout brand.

“As Sports Council, we appreciate your efforts to develop sports in the country. I would also like to ask DAM [Darts Association of Malawi]  to be accountable for the sponsorship so as to safeguard it. It is [also] pleasing to see how the game of darts is growing” he said.

DAM president Isaac Kaneka ,also thanked Carlsberg for bouncing back, saying darts and Carlsberg are inseparable.

On his part, DAM tournament director Charles Katola, said he will see to it that the tournament is run to the sponsor’s satisfaction. n
