Mbilizi said having assessed the impact of the tournament towards the development of football in the country, the company decided to raise the sponsorship package by K4 million ($5 533).

“Since we started sponsoring the tournament 48 years ago, it has helped unearth many players and some of them are playing for top teams,” said Mbilizi.

Flames stars Lucky Malata, Chawanangwa Kaonga, Joseph Kamwendo, Robert Ng’ambi and Chimango Kayira are some of the products of the Copa Coca-Cola Schools’ Tournament.

In this year’s edition, 1 550 school teams have registered.

Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) president Harris Kachale thanked Carlsberg for increasing the sponsorship, saying this will enable the competition to run smoothly with the increased number of participating teams.

Kachale said this year’s finals will be held in June at Kasungu Community Centre ground.

Minister of Sports and Culture Grace Chiumia thanked Carlsberg for the continued support towards football development in the country.

“As government we appreciate your support towards development of sports,” she said.
