Carlsberg Malawi Limited has made marriage vows with Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) as its official sponsor through their Special Brew brand.
Carlsberg trade manager Frank Binauli made the assurance on Saturday at the launch of the K3 million Special Brew National Championship, which also saw the start of the Central Region qualifiers at Ls Burg, in Lilongwe.
However, the marriage came with one strong condition of ‘discipline’.
“We are now official sponsors of pool in Malawi through this brand. We will continue supporting the sport, but on condition of discipline. Our brands are associated with love, so we do not want to be associated with acts of violence .
“We accepted to sponsor pool after being approached by Mapa because 90 percent of people who play this game consume our products. It is our obligation to give back to them as we have done with football and darts,” said Binauli.
He also said as sponsors, they were encouraged with the number of teams that have registered for the tournament (73), especially in the Central Region which has attracted 36 entrants.
Both Mapa president Chikondi Mbewe and Central Region Pool League (CRPL) chairperson Franco Banda, appealed to the teams to safeguard the sponsorship by increasing consumption of Special Brew and observing discipline during the games.
“It took us three years to successfully negotiate for this sponsorship. Let us not spoil this marriage. As Mapa, will do all we can to safeguard it,” said Mbewe.
The launch was also witnessed by Southern Region Pool League (SRPL) chairperson Davie Malunga.
