Carlsberg Special Brew Pool Championship is set to cue off July 1.
The competition will start at zone level, then regional level where best teams will qualify for the national finals slated for Mzuzu on October 28.
Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) vice-president Mathews Munthali said: “We are happy to announce that the Carlsberg Pool Championship is on, we are kicking off July 1. Meanwhile, registration is underway in all regions.
“Take note that the competition will start at zone level. Each zone will produce three teams that will qualify for regional finals. Regions that have more teams at regional finals will have more teams at national level, however, the maximum numbers will be four.”
The games will be played on a knock-out basis on home and away arrangement.
Prizes for the winners are yet to be set. But in the last edition, champions Siege Pool Club from Lilongwe got K650 000 while the runners-up, Malumezi Pool Club from Kasungu, received K500 000.
Third-placed Formula One from Blantyre got K300 000 while White House, who finished fourth, got K200 000.
Siege captain Chifundo Banda said they are looking forward to defending the title.
“Actually, this year we are coming hard. We have roped in very good young players and preparations are going on well. It is obvious that we will defend the title,” he said.
Northern Region teams failed to qualify for the finals in the previous tournament.
The region’s general secretary Prince Mokwena Banda has urged teams in the region to prepare for this year’s tournament. n
