Cashing in on Bingu’s funeral

Listen to this article

Some small businesses temporarily relocated to Parliament Building in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, on Monday and Tuesday where people were paying their last respects to the late president Bingu wa Mutharika. Jonasi Manasi (R) is one of the small-scale businesspeople who relocated from Tsoka Market’s vegetable segment at Old Town in the capital city.

“I came here because I knew that many people would be coming to pay their respects to our former leader and they would need to buy some food,” said Manasi.

He said the viewing ceremony boosted his business because he used two-50kg bags of potatoes to fry chips on Monday alone. Manasi said he normally sells a bag of potato in a day. —Amos Gumulira, Staff Writer
