Msusa: We are losing priests

Head of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, Archbishop Thomsa Msusa, says the Catholic Church is concerned with the death of its priests.

He made the remarks at Limbe Cathedral in Blantyre on Monday during the requiem mass in honour of late Father Benito Kamoto of Lunzu Parish.

Kamoto, 57, died last week at Mlambe Hospital and becomes the third priest to pass on in a space of one year.

“This is worrisome. Just last year during Easter, we also lost one of our priests. During my consecration as archbishop of Blantyre Archdiocese in February, we lost another. Already, we do not have enough priests,” Msusa said.

He asked the Catholic faithful to pray so that God may save the Church from the spirit of death.

Blantyre Archdiocese pastoral secretary, Father Alfred Chaima, said the death of Kamoto would create a lot of pressure on the church to find a replacement for its Lunzu Congregation.

Kamoto hailed from Sagawa Village in Traditional Authority Juma in Mulanje. He was ordained in 1985 and served Muloza and Mtepuwa Parishes in Mulanje. He was then posted to Kadikila, Mzedi, St Montfort (CI), Neno and Lunzu parishes in the Archdiocese of Blantyre.
