The day started with a mass celebrated by Reverend Father Makasa Chikwamo of the Lilongwe Archdiocese, which both the group members and the prisoners participated in. The mass took place at St. Dennis Church which is within the prison premises. In his sermon, Fr Chikwamo advised the prisoners to love one another and do everything in God’s way.

“Being here does not mean we are condemned, our life continues. We should always live in faith and worship God because it is what God wants us to do. We will one day be out of prison and live our normal life,” advised Fr Chikwamo.

Speaking after the mass, a representative of the grouping Elias Lazaro said the aim of the visit was to cheer the prisoners.

“We just wanted to encourage and express our love to them. Our visit here coincides with the year of mercy which Pope Francis declared, whereby we are supposed to do some charity work and show love to others,” said Lazaro. n
