Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Mangochi Diocese has donated 110 bicycles valued at K6 million to village forestry committees in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chowe in Mangochi District to ease their mobility when carrying out their duties.

In an interview, CCJP diocesan secretary for Mangochi Bruno Banda said the donation is part of CCJP’s drive to intensify messages on natural resources management under the Social and Gender Enhancement Fund (SGEF) Project being implemented in the area.

He said CCJP, with financial support from Millennium Challenge Account Malawi (MCA-Malawi), has been implementing the project since August 2015.

“The project is phasing out in July this year and before we finish, we want to ensure that we have put in place robust initiatives for sustainable management of  the environment,” said Banda.

Bishop of the diocese Montfort Stima, who presented the bicycles to the beneficiaries, urged them to devote their time and energy on initiatives that would conserve the environment.

“Let the bicycles be the machines to help you enhance efforts by engaging communities in best practices that would address wanton cutting down of trees,” he said.

T/A Chowe pledged to use the bicycles for the intended purpose. n
