Delegates to Chipani Cha Pfuko (CCP) first-ever convention on Saturday mandated interim president Davis Chester Katsonga to be its torch bearer in the May 20 presidential elections and to lead the party for the next five years.

In an interview, Katsonga said the party’s maiden indaba offered CCP an opportunity to taking part in the Tripartite Elections this year.

“Those who thought the party is small must be thinking twice now that we have taken a step towards the elections and I believe that the convention indicates how strong the party is with delegates coming from far and wide,” said Katsonga.

He said the party under his leadership will contest the May 20 elections, but was also open for ‘credible’ alliance offers from other parties.

“Chiefs throughout the country and the national executive council have advised that we go it alone, but with credible offers from other parties, we will consider the stand and may accept to partner other parties,” said Katsonga, who amassed 270 votes against his challenger, Baton Phiri’s 10.

Meanwhile, Katsonga has disclosed that his party will be presenting presidential nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission next Wednesday.

Katsonga, who is former speaker of the National Assembly, had earlier predicted victory in the May 20 2014elections if CCP joined forces with United Democratic front (UDF) and Malawi Congresss Party (MCP).

He cautioned parties against going it alone, warning that there was no single party that can unseat PP.
