Nsanje and Chikwawa residents have expressed satisfaction with how Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects have improved the education sector in the two districts.

According to people Malawi News Agency (Mana) interviewed on Tuesday, CDF projects, particularly in Nsanje South West Constituency and Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa, have helped in retaining pupils in school, reduced absenteeism during the rainy season and improved performance.

Dinde Primary School head teacher Gregory Sandalamu, whose school was connected to electricity using CDF in Nsanje South West Constituency, said pupils’ performance has greatly improved.

“It is evident that availability of electricity in primary schools plays a significant role in improving learning outcomes. For instance, at Dinde Primary School in 2014/2015 academic year, only 10 pupils were selected to Bangula and Nsanje secondary schools.

“But after the school was electrified, the performance improved tremendously. We sent 26 learners to secondary schools across the country,” he said.

A teacher at Khulubvi Primary School in Senior Chief Ngabu’s area, Gloria Kaleso, said the construction of a bridge on Malindi River has eased challenges teachers and pupils faced when it rained.

“Now even if it rains, we are able to cross the river and attend classes. There is no more absenteeism due to the fear of being washed away by rainwater,” she said.

Commenting on the issue, Ngabu Area Development Committee chairperson Richard Nkhutche applauded CDF for bringing positive change in his area.
