Cecafa approves Flames participation

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) executive committee has approved Flames’ participation in this year’s Tusker Senior Challenge Cup event.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Uganda from November 24 to December 8.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda on Tuesday confirmed receiving communication from Cecafa.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, Nyirenda described the development as encouraging, saying the tournament will help the Flames to tune up for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

“This is good news considering that Malawi’s next match will be against Namibia in March 2013 and the tournament will help exposing more local up-and-coming players,” said Nyirenda.

However, Nyirenda said the Flames participation is dependent on the availability of funding.

“We have since written the Ministry of Youth and Sports on the development,” he said.

Nyirenda also said should government approve Flames’ participation, the team is scheduled to go into camp on November 12 at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Limbe.

Last year, the Flames also took part in the tournament that was staged in Tanzania.
