Nyasa Big Bullets defender Yamikani Fodya says the Cecafa Kagame Cup player of the series award has inspired him to fight for a place in the Flames squad.

He said the award will spur him to do better and return to the Flames first team ahead of next month’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers and Africa Cup of Nations finals next year.

Fodya: It is a big motivation

Said Fodya: “Obviously, this award is a big motivation for me to work harder.”

Fodya played all Bullets’ five matches at the regional tournament, but has in recent months struggled to get a first team place and only found himself back in the squad because of Precious Sambani’s injury.

Coincidentally,  Sambani is also national football team coach Meck Mwase’ first choice left-back.

Bullets brought former Karonga United left-back Eric Kawonga to bring competition on the position.

He left an indelible mark at the tournament due to his exceptional defending skills as well as attacking prowess which helped Bullets reach the final unbeaten.

“After losing the final,  it feels good to return home with this award. I thank my teammates as well. Without them I could not get this award. It’s not just my award, it’s for the whole team,” said Fodya.

Meanwhile,  midfielder Chimwemwe Idana, who was also impressive during the tournament, received the Fair Play Award.

The People’s Team assistant coach Peter Mponda applauded his charges despite going down 1-0 to Ugandan champions Express FC.

He said: “We were caught on counter. We had the ball and we were attacking.

“Unfortunately, we lost it and they played a long ball and they scored. That was their clear shot on goal.

“The boys played well. Football is like that. It is about goals. It’s not a boxing match where you can win through points decision. You need to score .

“I am very impressed with the way the boys played. We have shown that we are a big team and we should be counted in Africa.”

Mponda said they will now shift their attention to TNM Super League, FDH Bank Cup and CAF Champions League.

Bullets have been drawn against AmaZulu FC in CAF Champions League and face Silver Strikers in FDH Bank Cup quarter-finals.
