Central Region denies endorsing Mwenda

Central Region Football Association (CRFA) has denied endorsing FAM first vice-president James Mwenda as presidential candidate in the Football Association of Malawi FAM elections in December.

In a press statement jointly signed by CRFA chairperson Austin Ajawa and general secretary Bernard Chiwiriwiri Harawa, the association stated that they only had a meeting with Mwenda, where he presented his plans.

The association was reacting to an article in yesterday’s edition of The Nation which quoted Harawa as having said they endorsed the FAM first vice-president.

“James Mwenda indeed approached us [committee] on his intention to stand as FAM president in December 2019. We wished him well in his campaign and this did not or does not, in any way mean endorsement,” reads the statement in part.

In an interview yesterday, Harawa said the statement was issued to clear the misrepresentation of facts as reported. However, Harawa said the association will decide after all the aspiring candidates give them their plans.
