Chakwera announced his decision to contest for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidency last month and presented his nomination papers a week later.

He claimed to have handed in his resignation to the comptroller of statutory corporations last week.

“I did send a notice to the comptroller of statutory corporation on Monday or Tuesday [last week].

“It was an honour to serve as chairperson of the Sports Council board, but the thing is, I did not want to be seen compromising my intent to join politics.

“So, it is indeed true that I have resigned,” said Chakwera who has also stepped down as president of the Assemblies of God.

Chakwera told Nation on Sunday recently that he joined the MCP presidency race because he feels he has the credentials to represent a new face of hope and the future that Malawians need.

Efforts to get a comment on the way forward from the Department of Statutory Corporations yesterday proved futile.

Other members of the council board include Emmanuel Gondwe, Wilma Chalulu, Grace Thipa, Dean Pinto, Gwynyth Chisale-Mchiela, Gibson Mkanda, Yasin Osman, Krishna Achutan and Julius Mithi.
