In what can be termed as a departure from tradition, President Lazarus Chakwera on Sunday visited his predecessor Peter Mutharika at the former president’s residence in Mangochi.
This is a rare feat in the political history of democratic Malawi as most leaders almost always expect ‘persecution’ when they leave office. Posting on his Facebook page, Chakwera was poetic as he said: “Foes, never. Rivals, sometimes. Compatriots, always.”
Similarly, Mutharika, on his Twitter page, stated: “Today, His Excellency Dr Lazarus Chakwera made a courtesy call on me at my Villa Mutharika in Mangochi. We had a very good chat. God Bless Malawi!”
Indeed, it would not be too far-fetched to call this ‘The Great Reconciation
