Blantyre City mayor Noel Chalamanda yesterday donated K500 000 worth of football uniforms and balls to Namiwawa and Chilomoni primary schools.

Chalamanda said the donation, which included 17 jerseys, shorts and socks to each school, aims at helping learners in his Blantyre City Centre Ward to refresh their brains after studies and live a healthy life.

“I thought of bringing you the soccer uniforms as a way of encouraging learners to take sporting activities seriously.

“Sport does not only help in terms of physical health as it also helps you to relax your brains for better understanding of class work,” he said.

Demister Bhima, Namiwawa Primary School’s Standard Eight learner who has made it into the Under-14 national team and has been roped into Surestream Football Academy, said the equipment will motivate them to win competitions, such as the Mayor’s Trophy.

Authorities under Primary education advisor (PEA) for Chilomoni Zone thanked the mayor for the assistance.
