Championship for Silver to lose

Listen to this article

Last month, Blantyre United striker Sparrow Msowoya dribbled his way into the TNM Super League championship race debate, arguing that the then leaders Red Lions lacked credentials to see them through to the winners’ podium.

The sharp as-an-arrow striker further contended that champion-designate is yet to appear on the horizon.

With his team placed in the lower rungs of the 15-member table, Msowoya was surely not prophesying about United.

Even bolder was Blue Eagles coach Derklerk Msakakuona who declared that the championship race would remain an unsolved cryptic puzzle until January.

True to this, the league leadership has moved from the Lions’ den to Kamuzu Barracks, back to the Lions and now at Mafco in Salima.

Some suggest the happenings signify that the league is competitive. If being unpredictable is the same as being competitive, then I agree. But I do not consider anything competitive when quality cannot be mentioned in the same breath.

If we agree that the quality of football being served on our pitches is not appetising, then we can conclude that the league has been reduced to a show for boys lacking men to raise the performance bar.

Even with this slump in quality, Silver, having done it in the past two consecutive seasons are better placed to win the league. They have depth and are peaking at the right time.

My second choice are Mighty Wanderers  who  until Friday were unbeaten in the second round, boast a healthy maximum tally, depth and unlike their rivals Big Bullets, are operating in a pressure-free zone following their Standard Bank Knockout Trophy retention.

As for Kamuzu Barracks, they successfully plotted their own down fall by tampering with the coaching panel, Mafco and the Lions cannot last the distance.

Lastly, allow me to thank friends, workmates and relatives for the prayers, the sights and sounds, the gifts, the smiles, the hugs, the tears of joy, the slow-motion moments and the goodbyes that will linger in our memories forever. You were such a great and wonderful company. May He bless you abundantly.
