The event’s sponsorship and communications coordinator under Lens Art Group, Chisomo Liabunya, told The Nation that the event has been created to recognise and appreciate art at the country’s institution of higher learning.

“We realised that the culture of recognising and appreciating art is exceedingly missing in Malawi. We believe that Chanco, with close to 4 000 students, has immerse talent that goes unnoticed and unappreciated. But such talent, if recognised, can encourage students to contribute to the development of arts in the country,” said the fourth year Bachelor of Science student.

Liabunya said most of the students have welcomed the idea.

“This interesting idea seem to have had the social media talking lately, with its Facebook page attracting over 400 likes in less than a week,” she said.

Auditions for the event are scheduled from July 1 to 4 and 20 will be selected for the first round of elimination show to be held at the college’s Great Hall on July 18.

“We are courting either Times TV or ZBS [Zodiak Broadcasting Station] to have rights in beaming the events. The first show shall not be a studio-closed door audition, but will certainly be shot for TV just like the rest of the event,” said Liabunya.

There shall be a total of four elimination shows with the ultimate winner taking home K500 000 (US$1 111) plus a recording deal.

“All these shall go under the scrutiny of three celebrity judges and there is a system that will allow voters to choose acts of their choice for the next show,” she says.

The event will also attract performances from trending acts in the industry, dance groups and poetry.

“It is billed to be a red carpet event that is set to attract the attendance of top billing acts and the attention of fun lovers as it shall offer a unique platform for marketing, TV and art experience altogether,” she promises.

Sponsors for the event will be unveiled at a later date, says Liabunya.
