Chanco support staff holding vigil at University office

Listen to this article

Support staff at the Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima) are currently holding a vigil at University Office in Zomba in a bid to force management to give them a salary increment.

The support staff, who are expected to be joined by their colleagues from other constituent colleges, officially began their sit-in on Tuesday claiming their employer, Unima management is failing to implement a 25 percent increment they were promised earlier.

However, Unima management says the decision by the support staff to have the sit-in is breach of agreement they entered last year regarding the increment.

A press release made available to The Nation signed by registrar Benedicto Malunga, has said the action taken by the support staff is a desire to entertain their personal interests at the expense of the students’ right to education.
