Chanco to celebrate 40 years of existence

Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima), has stepped up preparations for the 40th anniversary celebration in June this year.

According to the college’s librarian Dickson Vuwa Phiri, who is also responsible for protocol in the celebrations committee, the activities to mark 40 years of existence will take place on June 13 2013.

Said Vuwa Phiri: “The Chirunga Campus [Chanco] is clocking 40 years in June this year. The reason we would want to celebrate is that a lot has been achieved since it opened doors in 1973.

“You may wish to know that before that time, the college was a separate campus at Chichiri but part of Unima. There was Soche Hill College of Education and also Mpemba Institute of Law and Public Administration. Thereafter, the three campuses came under one umbrella at this purposely built Chirunga Campus.”

He said many people that have passed through the corridors of Chanco in various fields are in high positions in government and the private sector.

“So, we are inviting Unima alumni to come and celebrate together this achievement. We need to interact and see what the campus has come to over these years. We have to challenge as to what we are going to do in the wake of technological advancement,” he said.

He added that the institution needs more hostels, lecture theatres, science laboratories, a bigger library, and sports facilities. Some of the activities lined up for the event include sports, debates, and performing arts, among others.

Chancellor College was opened by former president Hastings Kamuzu Banda on July 2 1974.
