Felix Nsuzi’s first-half strike was enough for Changalume FC to beat White Eagles and cruise into the national phase of the Carlsberg Malawi Cup.

The match which was played at Prison ground in Zomba on Saturday was characterised by flashing of yellow cards and the referee drawing criticism from officials of both teams.

The Kanjedza-based police side looked nervous in the early minutes of the game as they played second-fiddle to the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) side.

The goal came following a string of passes involving Changalume’s Kumbukani Malinda, Chrispin Malikebu and Steve Nandolo resulting in Nsuzi breaking free to score past Eagle’s goalkeeper Willard Lunga.

A few minutes later, Nsuzi could have made it 2-0, but his glancing header was tipped over the bar by Lunga.

The visitors were a re-invigorated side in the second-half and looked poised for an equaliser. Some flashes of brilliance from Alex Saukani, Macdonald Keyala and Gabriel Msunuka exposed defensive weaknesses on the part of the soldiers. However, the final whistle found them still searching for goal.

Elsewhere in Carlsberg Cup on Saturday, BNC Produsak beat Cobbe Barracks 2-1 whereas Chikhwawa United defeated Evirom FC 1-0.
