Channel O selectors have called on Malawians to recognise female DJs and allow them to perform in pubs and other public places without being deemed loose and immoral.

The five female deejays made the call when they visited the country for performances at Chez International in Lilongwe and Blantyre recently.

In an interview, DJ Thabi Thabs said trends on the continent show that  the  future of female DJs is bleak because of cultural and religious stereotypes associated with women.

To reverse the trend, she has teamed up with other female DJs at Channel O—including Portable, Ann, Groove Candi and Lira T—to promote interested women and achieve gender equality in showbiz.

Thabi said:  “We know voice alone cannot improve the situation. We want to travel across the continent with performances and speak about our rights as female DJs. We are ready to partner with other DJs in African countries to organise shows where we can share the stage.

“Time is changing, but most societies in Africa still cling to traditions that do not favour the female child but deny her some rights. Being found at clubs is not a crime and it should be noted that disc jockeying is a career on its own.

Thabi has visited several African countries on invitation and she mesemerised locals during her tour two weeks ago.

On the other hand, DJ Portable said it is up to Malawians to develop the raw talent they exposed in partnership with Chez Ntemba.

She added that the skills women show during weddings and bridal showers testify to their potential to entertain people even in clubs.
