Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda has been elected chairperson of the upcoming African Union (AU) interviews for commissioners whose contract ends this June.
Chaponda confirmed his election in an interview on Wednesday ahead of the first planning meeting to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia next week.
He said his election has put Malawi on the map because he will be involved in scrutinising curriculum vitaes (CVs) for all the AU 54 member States who have applied.
Said Chaponda: “This is not an appointment, but I was elected. I think they looked at my background and I am fully aware that this is an overwhelming task and I will perform to the maximum.”
In an another development, the minister announced the third session of the Malawi/South Africa Joint Commission Cooperation (JCC), whose objective is to foster and consolidate bilateral cooperation between the two countries, will be held in Lilongwe next month.
He said the two countries are expected to review progress made in the implementation of the decisions, programme and commitments.
