Marketer Charles Kamoto has been appointed managing director for Airtel Malawi, a member of one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies, Bharti Airtel.

Kamoto becomes only the second Malawian to be at the helm of Airtel Malawi after economist-cum-marketer Saulos Chilima who quit the job in early 2014 to join mainstream politics and is currently the country’s Vice-President.

In a statement issued yesterday, Airtel said the appointment is with effect from March 1 2016.

Kamoto joined Airtel in May 2014 as chief commercial officer, bringing with him over 15 years of experience to the company. Previously, Kamoto worked for Airtel’s rival, locally owned TNM where he last served as chief commercial officer between January 2011 and May 2014.

“As the managing director for Malawi, Charles will continue to build on his good work to innovate winning customer solutions for Malawi, consolidate the gains made in defending our revenue market share and build external stakeholder relations.

“I would like to congratulate Charles on his well-deserved appointment and wish him every success in his new role,” said Christian de Faria, Airtel Africa chief executive officer, in the statement.

Efforts to speak to Kamoto on his new challenge proved futile as he was reportedly in a board meeting.

Kamoto holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (Esami).
