His song, Anachita Chobaya, on the underground soon after the death of Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa, was played on the sets of the keen. Now he is more open, as his debut album climaxes at Ralph Records.

Masankho Likupe dared the authorities with three 2011 singles—Anachita Chobaya, Muyaluka and Malawi Wathiridwa Tsabola—and he is not turning back as he works on Bola Kale, scheduled for release next month.

“I now hold it to be true that most politicians are liars. In the title track, I am looking back in our history; where we have been, where we are and where we are headed to as a nation,” said Likupe, known in some environs as Balaka Boy.

According to him, fear is no reason to keep quiet.

“When we look at how life was in the past and what is going on now, we look at the good old days with nostalgia. There was political oppression, but things were affordable for the poor,” said Likupe.

He claimed that after releasing the singles, he was hit by a car as he was coming from a musical performance in Blantyre.

“They were after me. I thank God that I am still alive. Most of my music revolves around politics. Just as the Israelites had enough rough times in the wilderness, we know those responsible for our affliction,” said Likupe.

The work is being produced by Ralph Ching’amba’s Namiyango Studios. Albums from Antony Makondetsa, a couple of songs from Lucius Banda’s Time and Black Missionaries’ Kuimba 9 are also pending at the studio.
