Chefo raise funds for charity

The Chewa chants of ‘yoGawa’ echoed the streets of Blantyre on Saturday as the Chewa Heritage Foundation (Chefo) walked to raise funds for charity.

The big walk started from Blanytre Old Town Hall to the Blantyre Cultural Centre (BCC).

Typical of the Chewas, the big walk was spiced by gulewamkulu dances and sweetened by traditional foods such as mbewa(mice) and therere la limanda.

The Chewas also showcased traditional dances such as chisamba, chintali and dusha.

Chairperson of the organising committee of the event Dyson Gonthi said they were overwhelmed by the patronage to the event.

He said the event was to call for peaceful co-existence and harmony among the Chewa in the Southern Region.

“We also want to encourage the youth to work hard in schools for a better future. We want to have a well educated people, but we also telling them to stay away from drugs and stop substance abuse,” said Gonthi.

After the big walk, Symon and Kendall entertained the patrons while Bwande wowed them with his poems at the BCC.

Notable faces at the event included Paramount Chief Lundu and group village heads Chitekwere and Tengani.
