Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) has shifted the inaugural Countrywide Car Hire Tournament from this weekend to a later date in May. The development will see three competitions being played within a month.

The shifting of the K300 000 (about $1 796) Countrywide Car Hire contest has arisen due to the 30-day mourning period of the late State president Bingu wa Mutharika, which ends on May 7.

Apart from the Countrywide tournament, the SRCL is also expected to host the Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) sponsored club championships and the qualifiers for the First Edition of the 2012 Lab Enterprises Chess Championships on May 26.

This will be the first time in local chess history to have three competitions played in a month.

“We will have a meeting on Wednesday in Blantyre to revisit the dates for the three events. But all the competitions will be played in May,” said SRCL interim chairperson Stanley Mtuwa.
