Chewas suspend all cultural gatherings

The King of Chewa people of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia Kalonga Gawa Undi has suspended all cultural gatherings that are held in preparation for the annual Kulamba ceremony which takes place at Mkaika in Zambia.

According to a statement from Gawa Undi delivered by Chewa Heritage Foundation (CHEFO) Chairperson in Malawi Prof George Kanyama Phiri the decision has followed  the current COVID-19 which has affected many countries.

The  statement further states that all Chewa cultural gatherings that attract huge crowds will resume after the COVID-19 Pandemic.


Kanyama Phiri said the sepenssion has not affected the Kulamba Ceremony which takes place in the last week of October. He said direction will be given depending on the situation as the ceremony approaches.
