The Small and Medium Entreprise Development Institute (Smedi) has trained 10 chicken farmers in Blantyre in poultry management and feed-making to boost their businesses.

Smedi southern region manager Lucy Limbe said on Friday during the close of the training it was beneficial as it equipped the farmers with new skills to boost production.

“By making their own feed, farmers reduce the cost of production by half. This means they have more profits making their own feed,” said Limbe.

According to course facilitator Wyson Mpanyira of Wabwino Poultry, training the farmers was necessary as demand for chickens is growing.

“Soon, some big shops that were not getting Malawian chickens will soon start demanding them. The farmers need to increase production while at the same time producing quality chickens for the market,” he said.

On the closing day, the farmers toured Chigumula chicken farmer, Rhoda Banda, who is raising 5 000 birds.

She said making her own feed reduces production costs and maximises her profits.

“The greatest advantage is that when you make your own feed, you make sure you include the ingredients in their rightful ratios, which is not the case in some readymade feed where you don’t know what the feed contains,” said Banda.
