Malawi’s top golfer Paul Chidale at the weekend defended his title in the annual Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) Match Play finals sponsored by Big Brother at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).

Chidale beat Wilson Kaingwe of Mzuzu Golf Club 2 and 1, meaning the game ended on hole 17.

When announcing the winner, BSC golf captain Donbell Mandala said: “The winner today of the 2012 Big Brother Match Play is a player that is ready to challenge any of the international participants in the forthcoming Zone Six Golf Championship which Malawi is hosting next month.

“I was privileged to have watched a few of his good shots. This young man is ready. He is none other than Paul Chidale.”

Chidale said he was excited to defend the honours.

In the plate category, it was George Chisambo from Lilongwe who won the event after beating seasoned golfer Stanford Mayuni. In the A Division, G. Macheka emerged the champion having beaten immediate past GUoM president Clement Chilingulo.

The B Division was won by Blantyre Sports Club vice-captain Medson Kalambule whereas Khumbo Mkandawire came second.

In the qualifying rounds played both in Lilongwe and Blantyre, James Chuma (Thyolo Sports Club captain) won with 71 net adjusted whereas Charles Kambalame of Lilongwe was second with 72 net. Third position was scooped by Blantyre-based Harold Lungu.

Big Brother managing director Shiraz Mojoo thanked Blantyre Sports Club for accepting to host the tournament and making it possible for his company to sponsor the event for the ninth year running. He assured the gathering that Big Brother sponsorship was here to stay.
