Traditional Authority (T/A)  Ndamera of Nsanje has asked the district council to upgrade Marka Police Unit to a police station because  it serves a big community.

The chief said this on Tuesday when Nsanje  South  legislator Ramzan Juma Mahomedi (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) handed over a house worth K14.5 million to Marka Police Unit.

The house donated to Marka Police Unit

Ndamera said the police unit serves people from T/As Nyachikadza, Makoko and Chimombo.

“Marka shares boundaries with neighbouring Mozambique [Villanova in Mutarara District in Zambezia Province], so we need a police station,” he said.

On his part, Mahomedi pledged to take the concern to relevant authorities in the Ministry of Homeland Security.

He said: “I used Constituency Development Fund to construct the house for one of the officers after noting that they are renting houses.

“However, I will strive to construct houses for all officers so that they should live close to the police unit.”

Nsanje Police Station officer-in-charge Seleman Mtambo thanked the lawmaker for the gesture.

“The house will motivate officers to work hard,” he said.

Marka Police Unit officer-in-charge Wiseman Chirwa asked for a vehicle to ease their mobility challenges.

“We struggle to get to hard-to-reach areas such as Lurwe, Bambala, Kavulanthenga, Thole and Ching’oma,” he said.
