Chiefs vital in developing Malawi—JB

Listen to this article

Malawi President Joyce Banda has called on chiefs in the country to desist from corruption and continue working towards developing Malawi.

Banda made the call at the installation of Traditional Authority Kadewere to a senior chief in Chiradzulu.

“I excelled as an MP because of chiefs…it will be impossible to develop the country if we leave out chiefs,” said Banda.

She hailed the efforts chiefs have been putting towards helping government’s agenda. She said the recent apprehension of the suspects that clobbered their boss to death in Blantyre and bolted with the deceased’s car was the fruit of efforts of a vigilant chief.

Banda called on Malawians to respect chiefs but said people should correct them where they can. She called on chiefs to let go of corruption and listen to their people.

“A good chief listens to his people,” said Banda.

She showered the newly crowned senior chief with a refrigerator and K500 000 (about $2 000) cash gifts.

Kadewere has, according to Banda, been senior chief since 2001.

Banda also touched on aiding illegal immigrants into Malawi which she said is being fuelled by some police officers.
