Malawian sensation, Chigo Gondwe, is among seven poets from five African countries taking part in the African Poetry Slam Movement that has exploded into life across the borders.

The slam begun on Friday at Book Cafe’ in Harare as part of Shoko Festival, an African fiesta that knows no borders, or boundaries of expression.

Gondwe is expected to share the stage with poets such as Tim Mwaura (Kenya Slam Champion), Afurakan and Emmah Mabye (South Africa), Botswana’s Mandisa Mabuthoe, Wanjika (Kenya), Nomsa Mazwai (South Africa) and other Zimbabwean well known poets.

The Shoko Festival will run for over six days. It will feature various activities such as live concerts, DJ parties, photo exhibitions, workshops and debates.

The Regional Slam is a continuation of the exciting regional poetry initiative first launched in 2011. In Harare, the “House of Hunger” Poetry Slam Movement is a living legend.
