Chikhwawa United thrashed hosts Zomba United 6-2 yesterday to earn TNM Super League promotion—ending Lower Shire’s nine-year wait for representation in the elite league.

Chikhwawa got the promotion from the Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League’s (SRFL) Premier Division after emerging champions on 84 points, three ahead of second-placed Cobbe Barracks who could only manage a 4-2 win over Green Hawks at Kamuzu Stadium yesterday.

Duncan Mwale’s double and a goal each from leading scorer Dave Chadewa, Utumbe Zongoloti, Stoka Munthali and Ian Banda did the business for Chikhwawa, erasing Zomba’s strikes from Isaac Nankhaka and Luke Magaleta.

Going into yesterday’s game, Cobbe coach Chifundo Masapula must have been hoping for a win and that Chikhwawa should stumble in Zomba, but it was not to be.

“We congratulate Chikhwawa on making it. We tried our best, but it was not to be,” Masapula said in a post-match interview.

At Kamuzu Stadium, Cobbe netted through Saopa Mpotalinga’s double and other goals from Luke Muyaba and James Saimoni whereas Andrew Kamlete and exciting Moses Scoti claimed some respect for Hawks.

Chikhwawa now join in the Super League Chipiku Central Region premier division kings Support Battalion. Kabwafu also seem destined for Super League promotion from the Northern league.
