Chikhwawa United sign Gatros

Ambitious Chikhwawa United have roped in former international defender Joseph Gatros as they aim for TNM Super League promotion.

United chairperson Owen Chomanika on Thursday said Gatros had what it takes to perform in the second tier, Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League’s (SRFL) Premier Division.

“The former Flames pillar has been drafted to deepen the squad and resuscitate his career. We hope to make him a Gatros of the highest quality,” Chomanika said in a statement.

In his 30s, Gatros cut short his Flames career after being dropped in the regular squad in 2003 before also disappearing from Big Bullets.

Coached by veteran Dave Mpesi, Chikhwawa recently sensationally booted out Blue Eagles from the Presidential Cup to reach the quarter-final.

“We are hot contenders, not pretenders, targeting position one or two at the least. We have added some new faces to our squad such as Weston Kwaiva from Nsanje, targeting one keeper. We also have three players from our reserve side,” said Chomanika.

He said they had lined up fundraising activities such as a big walk on September 29.

“We want to lobby the district assembly and its stakeholders for the upgrading our ground. Currently, we will be using Kalulu Stadium for high-profile friendlies. Expect much from us this time if not on the pitch, then our being organised and novel will surpass all,” he said.
