Chiku’s Botswana deal stalls
Chikumbutso Kanyenda— Big Bullets’ longest serving defender of this decade—returned home on Monday from Botswana where his potential transfer to Gaborone United stalled.
The experienced left back confirmed on Tuesday that United, with whom he spent two months, were unable to register him outside the transfer window.
“I will be joining them in January. They tried to register me by de-registering another foreigner, but the Botswana Football Association [BFA] referred them to the January transfer window,” Kanyenda explained.
Earlier, Bullets general secretary Harold Fote said they had cleared Kanyenda to join United as a free agent following the expiry of his contract last December.
“Having served the club diligently and after consulting the coaches, who advised us that he was not in their plans, we said as a retirement package we should let him go,” Fote explained.
Kanyenda is the only remnant player from the great squad of 2004 that made a big impression in CAF Champions League by reaching the group stages.
He joined the Bullets from Admarc Tigers in 2003 alongside Fundi Akidu who is now in the Bullets’ coaching panel.
Meanwhile, Silver Strikers striker Green Harawa is still holed up in Botswana where he has been on trials with Extension Gunners for five months with the two clubs failing to agree on his loan deal suggested by the Gaborone side.
