Chikwawa-East Bank Road construction on the cards

Government says it has identified a contractor to start the construction of the $53 million Chikwawa East Bank Road in the Shire Valley.

Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango said this on Monday in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana).

He said the contractor, China Railway Number 5, will construct a gravel all-weather road and four bridges.

“The whole project will cost $53 million which will largely come from the World Bank’s Flood Recovery Programme,” Mhango said.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, who is also Nsanje North legislator, Esther Mcheka Chilenje, asked government to expedite the project.

“A good road network in the East Bank will boost business activities,” she said.

The East Bank Road connects Chikwawa and Nsanje districts. It passes through Thabwa-Livunzu-Fatima areas.
