Chikwawa households in flood recovery project

The Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (ELDS), with support from Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), is implementing a recovery programme under the central emergency response fund (CERF 111) project in Chikwawa District.
The project targets people who have been displaced by recent floods that hit 15 of the country’s 28 districts.
Sautso Wande, ELDS Chikwawa district project officer, said the aim of the project seeks to ensure that displaced households and host populations have access to agricultural inputs, to replant crops and rear livestock for long term food security.
She said: “Materials distributed to affected households include 110 treadle pumps, 30 000 kilogrammes [kgs] of NPK fertiliser, 40 000 kgs of Urea, 6 000kgs of maize seed, 4 000 kgs of beans 10 000 kgs of vegetable and 6 000 kgs of cowpeas seed.”
Wande said with the assistance, 2 000 households have been prepared for winter cropping and another 3 000 have benefitted from the rain-fed recovery initiative.
ELDS launched an emergency relief project for the flood victims soon after President Peter Mutharika declared 15 districts as disaster areas early this year.
