Chikwawa District Health Office (DHO) says it is making strides in the fight against HIV and Aids in the district.

District health officer Stalin Zinkanda made the remarks on Friday when he graced the Candlelight Memorial event which took place at Nkhate Community ground in Senior Chief Makhuwira in the district.

“We have recorded 82 percent prevention of mother-to-child transmission [PMTCT] of HIV. However, it is sad to note that through some cultural beliefs and religious practices, the fight against HIV and Aids becomes difficult,” he said.

Zinkanda said the Candlelight Memorial offers communities and duty-bearers an opportunity to reflect on initiatives and get equipped with better ways of dealing with the pandemic.

He urged people to go for HIV testing and those on treatment to adhere to doctors’ prescriptions.

Group village head Kavalo thanked the DHO for the event which he said reminded the people of the dangers of HIV and Aids.

The memorial was commemorated under the theme Reflecting on Our Past As We Prepare For Our Future.
