In Chikwawa, the organisation has implemented a three-year project dubbed Safe School and Inclusive Education in extension planning areas (EPAs) of Mbewe and Nchalo to benefit 11 schools.

Speaking on Tuesday at the opening of a three-day training workshop at Nchalo, the organisation’s executive director Mary Manyusa Mangwiza said it was proper that teachers were imparted with special needs skills to ensure that children with disabilities access quality education.

She said: “I believe that through training, teachers can deliver the organisation’s mission and that requires them to have basic skills of teaching physically challenged children.

Chikwawa district education manager (DEM) Chrissy Chimsale said the workshop was necessary as it would help teachers understand some of the factors contributing to absenteeism. n
