As the number of children joining the Kadish Children Hockey Camp increases in the Southern Region, Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) has disclosed that they will take the developmental initiative to the Centre and North next month.

National coach Geoffrey Biya said on Wednesday that the purpose of the camp is to develop hockey from the grassroots, increase the number of athletes and raise awareness about the sport in the country.

The initiative is being conducted with financial and material support from the Netherlands-based Kadish Foundation.

“We started the camp at the Hockey Stadium in Blantyre with 53 children, but now we have 150 children. We believe that we can rope in even more children if we widen the catchment area; hence, the decision to go to Centre and North in December,” said Biya.

He said they are targetting to bring into the sport at least 5 000 new athletes by 2017.
