Chilemba gets 4 bout offers

Revered South Africa-based boxer Isaac ‘Golden Boy’ Chilemba has received offers for four bouts as he looks forward to bouncing back after pondering retirement.

The former International Boxing Organisation (IBF) super middleweight  champion last fought in May this year when he lost on points to Cuban Osleys Iglesias in a unified WBA Intercontinental and IBO international super middleweight title bout.

In an interview from his Johannesburg base yesterday, the 35-year-old said he has for now shelved his plans to hang up his gloves.

Chilemba is back in training

He said: “After careful consideration, I have decided that I will hang on in there. I have two offers from Russia, one from Poland and another from Nigeria.

“I let my manager [Sean Smith] do the negotiations and decide which one would suit us best. Once a deal is struck, it will be announced.

“I am currently back in training and working on conditioning then I will turn to road work later.”

His record stands at 26 wins, including 10 TKOs, nine losses (one TKO) and three draws.

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board chaiperson Lonzoe Zimba said it is good that Chilemba has shelved his plans to retire.

“Most prominent professional boxers retire when they are over 40. So, I feel he still has some way to go, only that the older you get the more your body wears out.

“So, all he needs to do is plan properly.”
